Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
