🔗 Share this article NFL Week Five Surprise: Eagles Fall to Broncos while Bills Succumb to Patriots The final pair of undefeated squads in the NFL watched their flawless starts broken during the fifth week as both the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills suffered shocking losses on their own turf. Denver's football team transformed from dark horses to front-page news following an impressive rallying win against the reigning Super Bowl title holders Philadelphia, prior to boarding a plane for this Sunday's London matchup. The New England Patriots then traveled to Buffalo and halted the Bills' undefeated start with a statement win of their own in their initial national television appearance in a full year. The Baltimore Ravens experienced a third straight defeat - their defensive woes could be fatal for their play-off hopes - while the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis, and Detroit Lions enjoyed decisive victories on yet another eventful Sunday. Broncos Defeat Title Holders Not only was it defeating the reigning title holders, but the way of their comeback from 14 points down that made the Broncos' win by 21-17 in Philadelphia such a defining success. The Eagles had won 10 contests consecutively, 12 straight at home and 20 out of 21 total before Broncos quarterback Bo Nix engineered two scoring drives in five fourth-quarter minutes and a last-minute three-pointer. Philadelphia are currently 4-1 but there exists significant concern about the offence, which sits among the poorest performing in the NFL. Receiver DaVonta Smith stated they are not "in sync" with quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Broncos' defensive unit, which tackled Hurts six times, had much to contribute with the outcome, and, combined with an established starting QB in Nix and elite coach in Sean Payton, they have all the ingredients to launch a legitimate playoff push. The Broncos meet the New York Jets at Tottenham Stadium on Sunday. Primetime Patriots Shock Buffalo If Denver's win was almost half expected, nobody saw the Patriots traveling to Buffalo and defeating Josh Allen's Bills, but they did so with huge character. A first primetime game for Drake Maye produced a breakout performance as he directed a game-winning scoring drive in the dying seconds to win 23-20. Maye was tough and made accurate passes at the right times, several to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who had an outstanding performance for Mike Vrabel's team. Vrabel was expected to turn things around in New England, but such a significant victory came earlier than many predicted. The Patriots defence contained Buffalo's offensive efforts during their surprising road victory. Ravens Play-off Dreams Dashed? The season is becoming a nightmare for Baltimore, who were missing a host of defensive stars as they were dominated 44-10 by the Houston Texans. It matched their biggest home defeat, and falling to 1-4 for this year means one of the preseason Super Bowl contenders have just a small chance of making the play-offs. The Ravens are now 4-11 when missing superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was injured, but it is an exceptionally poor defensive unit that is the real problem - for a franchise that have been synonymous with stout defense historically. Houston coasted to victory as the Ravens became the initial squad in modern NFL history to allow at least 37 points in four of their first five contests. Their season is already over. Lions, Bucs and Colts Reach 4-1 The Lions' running back duo Gibbs and Montgomery registered a touchdown in one contest for the 14th time - a joint NFL record - as Detroit defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 37-24. Victory made it four victories in a row for the highest-scoring team Detroit, but none against opponents with positive records. A more surprising 4-1 team are the Indianapolis Colts. With their star running back running in a hat-trick in their decisive hammering of the Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Daniel Jones looking like a transformed player, they will be a difficult opponent for any side. Tampa Bay entered the four-win group with a mesmeric 38-35 win in Seattle in which the sides traded nine scores in 10 sparkling possessions before the Seahawks faltered initially with a late interception. Chase McLaughlin booted the winner with the last kick of the contest for his second occasion this year. All four of the Bucs' victories have been secured in the final moments. Saints and Titans Receive Assistance for First Wins The way the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee started the season, they needed help to secure their initial victories, and they received ample due to several comical errors from New York and Arizona. After a good start from New York rookie Jaxson Dart, New York made five turnovers - one was crucially taken back for six points - while also allowing Rashid Shaheed to find the end zone on an 87-yard catch and run as New Orleans won 26-14. The Cardinals were more disastrous as they squandered a 21-3 lead mainly due to two huge blunders. Initially, Emari Demercado unexplainably fumbled the football just before reaching the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown. More disastrous followed when Arizona intercepted Cam Ward close to their end zone, then fumbled the ball into the end zone for Tyler Lockett to recover as Tennessee snapped a 10-game slide with a 22-21 victory. Tyler Lockett registered one of the most farcical scores witnessed this year. That left the Jets as the only winless squad remaining in the NFL after their punishing 37-22 loss by Dallas. The quarterback became the initial athlete in NFL history to eclipse 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 yards rushing in his first 20 career games as he returned from injury to steer Washington to an impressive 27-10 win at the Los Angeles Chargers. The running back was the star man for Carolina with over 200 yards on the ground in their exciting 27-24 victory over Miami.
