Minister Says MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This wider defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
