The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
